Stream pages with one post only should have a <link rel="canonical"> to reduce page competition and promote ranking of the page with higher value.

Stream pages with minimal content should have a <meta name="ROBOTS" content="NOINDEX, FOLLOW">until there is enough content that shows relevancy and is of enough value to rank. Story Type pages are of higher value and should be Indexed sooner than tag pages.


Workflow:

  • story type/tag is created in Kinja
  • when an article is published with that story type, a stream page is created
  • no index the stream page until there are X articles
  • re-index the stream page when there are X articles

No Index and Canonical Rules:

Story Type: No Index < 5 posts, if 1 post, canonical to the post itself.

Category: No Index < 5 posts, if 1 post, canonical to the post itself.

Subcategory: No Index < 5 posts, if 1 post, canonical to the post itself.

Tags: No Index < 20 posts, if 1 post, canonical to the post itself.
